For hundreds of years Naples was considered one of the most important cities of Europe. It was the southernmost tip of the classical Grand Tour, an unavoidable port of call visited by writers, poets, politicians and scientists. When Italy was unified under Garibaldi in the middle of the 19th century, Naples had twice as many residents as Milan.
